The area is believed to be growing at an altitude of about 10 miles per year. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was discovered in 1997 by a team of scientists on a research cruise aboard the research vessel Alguita. The voyage began on May 18 under the banners of environmental group Sea Shepherd. On board were Dr. Charles "Pete" Schindler, a marine biologist from San Francisco State University and his crew of seven, including oceanographers Dr. David Gallo and Dr. Robert Lawrence, both from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, oceanography professor John Hooke from Stanford University, a documentary film crew led by producer Michael Kundu of Environmental Media Services and two journalists from the San Francisco Examiner - reporter Hamlin Garland and photographer Leslie Bruna. While the Alguita was in port in Long Beach, California, before the expedition began, Schindler discovered that his research funding had been cut off.
